On arriving nervous to a first session
Almost everyone does. It is worth saying plainly what a first appointment involves, because uncertainty is doing half the work of the anxiety.
People frequently apologise in the first few minutes for being nervous. It is one of the most reasonable responses there is: you are about to speak honestly to someone you have never met.
What the consultation is for
It runs up to ninety minutes. We talk about what has brought you, some background, and what you are hoping for. We cover paperwork and fees. Nothing commits you to continuing.
You set the pace
You are never required to say more than you are ready to. Some people arrive with everything prepared; others need several sessions before the real thing is spoken. Both are workable.
Deciding afterwards
It is entirely reasonable to meet a therapist and decide they are not the right fit. Take the time, and ask whatever you need to ask.
