How it works
In-depth talk therapy
Psychodynamic therapy aims to bring unconscious or deeply buried thoughts and feelings to the conscious mind, so that repressed experiences and emotions, often from earlier in life, can be brought to the surface and examined.
Our goal in therapy is to work closely with you to become more aware of your patterns of relating, and to explore how they may have been established — within a framework designed to foster independence and self-compassion.
Why psychodynamic
Why I work this way
Most therapies help. They differ in what they go after. Shorter, structured models are very good at changing a specific symptom or behaviour. Psychodynamic therapy asks a different question: why does this keep happening to me, and why in this particular way?
Cause, not only symptom
It works on the pattern
Managing anxiety is worth doing. Understanding what the anxiety is protecting you from tends to mean it has less need to return.
Change that holds
The gains tend to keep growing
Research on psychodynamic therapy consistently finds that improvement continues after the work ends, as insight keeps being applied to new situations.
Nothing off the agenda
No protocol to follow
There is no session plan or homework. You bring what is pressing that week, including the things that don’t fit a diagnosis.
Relationships
It is especially suited to relational difficulty
If the same painful dynamic recurs across partners, families or workplaces, the therapeutic relationship is where it can be noticed as it happens — and changed.
Depth
For what has never been said
Trauma, loss and shame are often held out of words. This approach gives them time and safety rather than a worksheet.
Being honest about fit
When another model may suit you better
If you want a short, structured programme for one clearly defined problem, a CBT-based therapy may serve you better — and I will say so at consultation.
What to expect of me
The therapeutic relationship does the work
Psychodynamic counsellors don’t give direct advice. Instead, therapy is a place of safety where your difficult feelings and emotions can be explored without judgment, and in confidence.
The therapeutic relationship becomes a vital element of your therapy: a safe testing ground for finding healthier and more satisfying ways of being, and of relating to others.
